This is not some subjective bake-off where I am grading chocolate chip cookies because they taste good to me. My personal likes and dislikes have absolutely nothing to do with the rating process. An ingredient either contributes to, or detracts from, a cat’s health. Period.

Look at the can’s ingredients list and compare it to the bad ingredients list HERE.

Viva Raw®?

If you look at this section of other reviews on this website, you’ll see entire lists of bad and/or questionable ingredients. There are some ingredients of questionable value in Viva Raw’s product line, but none of these ingredients would cause me to drop the overall Grade A product description. The fact is… Even with these questionable ingredients, Viva Raw® is still a superior food for your cats.

I question the use of:

Organic Psyllium Husk – which is a bulk filler, primarily included as fiber to promote the movement of things such as hairballs in the digestive system.
Nutritional Yeast – Yeast is a common allergen for cats, and it is completely unnecessary in a cat’s diet.
Blue Mussels and Oysters – I don’t think I want to feed my cats anything that lives at the sea bottom and filters toxins for a living. Besides that, have you ever seen a cat in the wild go diving for exotic seafood?

My Review Summary

My Evaluation/Review Of The Entire

Viva Raw® Product Line

Those of you who have followed my cat food reviews for years know quite well that I am very, very critical of cat food manufacturers in general. Most companies use substandard ingredients, some of which are downright detrimental to a cat’s long-term health. Most cat food manufacturers are more dedicated to shelf life than they are to a cat’s life, and most all of them should be ashamed of themselves.

Not so with Viva Raw®!! In fact, Viva is one of the best cat foods I have ever found.

Available for shipping directly to your doorstep, Viva provides ingredients which are beneficial to a cat’s overall health and wellbeing.

Perhaps first and foremost, Viva provides the required nutritional value for obligate carnivores without all the detrimental things found in other cat foods – things such as soy, wheat gluten, corn, rice, fruits, vegetables, kelp, algae, GMOs, or artificial colorings / flavorings / preservatives. No BPA lined cans either.

Secondly, I do have minor reservations regarding some of Viva’s ingredients – which I address above.

Thirdly, I personally like Viva’s vacuum sealed packaging better than cat food packaged in a container. I simply thaw the package in the refrigerator, cut it open, cut the product into appropriate serving sizes, and seal each portion in small, glass 2oz. Mason (Ball) jars. Some jars go to the fridge for feeding in the next few hours, some go to the freezer for thawing and feeding later. In addition to enabling better freezer space storage, portioning the food in small glass jars enables you to diminish the freezer-to-refridgerator-to-plate time, with fairly quick hot tap-water warmup – which I insist on for my cats. After all… cats in the wild don’t eat cold food do they? (that’s a rhetorical question – let’s not get into trivial details here lol.)

The only suggestion I have for improving Viva Raw® is that they broaden their protein choices to include species-appropriate foods from other herbivore/ungulate animals. I hope they never, ever, ever use pork or fish, both of which contain things detrimental to a cat’s health. [Read more about these subjects here.]
