How I Evaluate Cat Foods…

“After having studied the ingredients in over 1,500 wet, canned cat foods, I created this website. This is the place to hear some truth about cat food. It’s also the place where you can learn to evaluate cat food brands yourself.” – Doug Hines

First read the Cat Food Reviews – Introduction to understand how I evaluate products.

I assign review ratings based solely on the ingredients in the can.

This is not some subjective bake-off where I am grading chocolate chip cookies because they taste good to me. My personal likes and dislikes have absolutely nothing to do with the rating process. An ingredient either contributes to, or detracts from, a cat’s health. Period.

Look at the can’s ingredients list and compare it to the bad ingredients list HERE.

Protect your cat’s long term health. Don’t feed products which contain bad ingredients. Choose wisely now, and give your cat a good, healthy life later.

My Review Summary

My Evaluation/Review Of The Entire

Pure Cravings® Product Line

I feel almost obligated to do a review of ‘Pure Cravings®’ to provide cat parents/guardians/caregivers with an alternative, more realistic, perspective upon which to judge the products. Heaven forbid that people innocently buy into the ‘Pure Cravings®’ website marketing hype.

I cannot figure out why so many cat food manufacturers start off with a good idea and turn it into crap.

‘Pure Cravings®’ is such a company/product line.

As expressed elsewhere in this website, because of its natural propensity for contamination, fish/seafood should not be used as a primary daily food. Said another way, Feeding your cat(s) fish often/regularly is not a good idea. Fish/seafood should only be an intermittent, supplemental, occasional food for cats.

When I heard that ‘Pure Cravings®’ sold “The ONLY 100% mercury tested fish for cats”, I jumped at the opportunity and ordered a sample variety case for my cats to test. [Had I examined the ingredients more closely, I never would have ordered it. I guess I was blinded for my desire for a mercury tested cat food. Please don’t make the same mistake.]

I just could not ignore the website assertions:

• “Mercury Tested” • “Human Grade” • “No Grains or GMOs” • “Sustainably Caught” • “100% Traceable”

That description sounded exactly like the kind of supplemental food I wanted for my cats.

Fact is, ‘Pure Cravings®’ starts off with an excellent premise of providing “strict purity standards” for protein, and then dumps the can full of other ingredients, some of which are even deemed ‘detrimental to a cat’s long-term health.’

Don’t believe me? Just look at the ingredients. ‘Pure Cravings®’ is just another cat food manufacturer using the typical mix of bad and/or questionable ingredients.

Here’s my question for ‘Pure Cravings®’… Why, oh why, did you screw up the concept of 100% mercury tested fish so badly?

I cannot, in good conscious, give ‘Pure Cravings®’ products to my cats.
